Congrats to Katie for being chosen as the 2010 Jenny Craig Poster Girl, see her in every Jenny Craig Center! When you sign up, don't forget to say "Katie sent me".

Hello!  I'm Katie from Cincinnati.  I will be blogging daily on how I maintain my weight and live a healthy lifestyle.  Feel free to pick and choose portions of my food and exercise choices to find what works for you.  I know what it is like to try vast variety of diets, grueling workout regimes, pills, and even surgery - with no positive results!  More so, even if you do get positive results I know how challenging it can be to make lifestyle changes that are possible and keep the weight off.  I am 27 years old and currently weigh 117 pounds.  However, I have not always been this thin and the weight struggle has been something that has plagued me all my life.  Some of you may even have read my "story" in the Cincinnati Enquirer or have seen me on a national commercial for Jenny Craig.

Katie's Healthy Eating

I can remember back to second grade dealing with the embarrassment of being overweight for my age.  Some kids were cruel and the occasional teasing was enough to make me want to hide in bigger clothes, watch how much I ate in front of my friends, and work out constantly.  Luckily I had plenty of sports and a supportive family that served healthy meals to keep my weight in check.  I may have been bigger than most girls my age but I would never say I was huge.  However, the damage was done, I was constantly aware of my body and in college I chose to take drastic measures.  It wasn’t easy going away to college without parents to keep such a close eye on me.  I went from working out twice a day to basically trying to starve myself, and even worse, soon throwing up any food I did eat.  My parents, friends, and boyfriend had no idea.  It was even harder being a student at Miami University with the perception I had that almost everyone there was beautiful, thin, and appeared "perfect."  Finally at the end of my junior year I could no longer take the secrets and lies.  I was so close to my parents and the pain I had begun to feel in my chest was scaring me.  I knew I had to tell them.

Confiding to my parents that I had an eating disorder was no easy task.  But, with the help of a therapist I was able to begin the slow crawl back to a healthier image of myself.  I still felt depressed about my weight but my doctor had suggested liposuction and that had given me hope.  I was no longer throwing up my meals and my parents just wanted to help me be happy so there I was 21 years old and getting surgery.  The surgery may have contoured my body but I was still a big girl, I had reached a whopping 196 pounds!  Liposuction had been painful and I knew it had been just a quick fix.  I needed to find something that was going to work long-term for the rest of my life.

Luckily I had an incredible boyfriend and family that supported my attempt at the Jenny Craig program.  I think for me, admitting how big I had gotten, and walking through those doors was one of the scariest decisions of my life.  Almost three and a half years ago is when I started the program, through a series of small weight loss goals I finally hit my goal weight which was 120 after two and a half years.  I had an amazing relationship with my consultant, Molly, and I actually loved the food.  Doing the program for so long was a bonus because it created new habits and taught me portion control.  Now I have been off the program for a year and a half and actually MAINTAINED my weight.  It feels good to finally be in control and happy about myself.

If nothing else, maybe my blogs will help you - feel free to ask me any questions by responding to my blog!  I am not an expert on food and fitness, just someone that wants to share what has worked for me.

Good Eating,
Katie B ….
